About PSYLLIUM
Description
The active ingredient of Equus Psyllium Pellets is the outer coat or husk of the psyllium seed (Plantago ovata). This outer coat has a high content of hemicellulose mucillages that allow for it's dramatic absorption of water.
Indications
In general, the addition of fiber to the diet has been shown to help "normalize" colonic function, and is therefore, indicated for both disorders of constipation and diarrhea. Specifically, the primary indication of psyllium in horses is as an aid in the prevention of sand accumulation and subsequent colic. Psyllium has been recommended for the treatment of sand colic and malabsorbtion.
Actions
Psyllium forms intestinal bulk not only by absorbing water but also through increased bacterial mass following partial fiber breakdown. It is through this bulk producing capacity that the benefits of sand removal, decreased intestinal transit time, and softer stools are attributed.
Storage
This product should be stored in a tightly closed container to protect from moisture and excess humidity.
Doses
Although recommendations vary the generally recognized regime for a 1000 pound horse is a 4-8 oz. once daily one week each month. It is also generally accepted that daily administration for a full month is advisable when starting a psyllium program. Many other dosing programs have been recommended for the treatment of sand accumulation and colic in the horse, consult your veterinarian for details.
Contraindications
This product should not be used in the acute management of colic without the direct supervision of a veterinarian. If signs of colic occur (pawing at the ground, rolling, splashing in the water, standing stretched out, ect.) consult your veterinarian immediately.
Overdosages
Psyllium is generally considered safe at several times the recommended levels, especially in the face of adequate water. However, at levels beyond this your veterinarian should be consulted on a case by case basis. |
